What are composite build-ups?

A dentist will enhance your smile by shaping and bonding a small amount of composite dental material to a misshapen or discoloured tooth. ‘Building up’ your tooth with this resin-based material will help it look smooth, whole and even.

A composite build-up is a conservative and cost-effective restoration because the dentist does not have to significantly reduce your tooth to place the build-up. Composite build-ups are most suitable for upper front teeth, which do not experience a lot of chewing force.

The process

Getting a composite build-up is a quick and pain-free process. You will not need any anaesthetic because the dentist will not be drilling deep into your teeth.
Here is what to expect:

1

The dentist will lightly shape your tooth to roughen up the attachment surface.

2

A conditioning liquid will be applied to your tooth to encourage the composite material to adhere.

3

Next, the dentist will apply a tooth-coloured composite resin putty to your tooth, shaping it to fill in and cover all imperfections.

4

Then, the dentist will use a special curing light to instantly harden the composite build-up.

5

Finally, the dentist will polish your new restoration so it blends seamlessly with the rest of your tooth.
Your treatment will be completed within just one appointment and you will be free to go about the rest of your day with no side-effects or discomfort.
