Dental Implants

A dental implant is a titanium screw that’s placed directly into your jaw,
replacing your missing tooth root. After it’s fitted, the bone surrounding
your implant will gradually fuse to it, holding the implant firmly in place.

A false tooth which matches the colour and shape of your existing
teeth is then fitted to the top of the implant, leaving you with a fixed
solution and a natural looking smile. It looks, feels, and functions just like a natural
tooth.

Dental implants are popular alternatives to other tooth replacements like bridges and
partial or complete dentures. Implants are unique because they replace tooth roots
and the visible upper portion of teeth, so they provide both functional and aesthetic
value.

Benefits of dental implants

Dental implants offer many unique benefits:

1. Comfort

Dental implants fit in naturally with the rest of the teeth in your mouth. They are independent restorations that anchor directly to your bone, so they do not need to rest on your gums or other teeth for support. They are LONG TERM and FIXED solutions.

2. Functionality

Implants work just like natural teeth, and they can even increase the strength of your bite.

3. Aesthetics

Dental implants do more than fill in gaps in your smile. They also preserve your tooth alignment by preventing your other teeth from shifting.
Just like natural tooth roots, implants stimulate the bone in your jaw and this prevents the bone loss that typically occurs when natural tooth roots are missing. Thus, dental implants will help to maintain the height and shape of your smile. If your smile has already started to sink and crease due to a lack of teeth, implants can fill it back out again.
Implant restorations look natural and no metal parts will be visible when you smile. No one will know that your implant is not a natural tooth.

4. Health

You can enjoy improved nutrition with dental implants since they will enable you to eat all kinds of foods. They also preserve existing jaw bone and help preserve your facial structure.

5. Confidence

You will experience a major boost in your confidence that will stay with you for a lifetime. Dental implants will improve the appearance of your smile by replacing lost or damaged teeth. Because implants are so secure, they will also help you smile, laugh, eat, speak and sing with confidence as you will not have to worry about your false teeth falling out.

3

Implant Placement

Placing your dental implant is a brief and minimally invasive surgical procedure. Dr Nimit will numb the implant site with a local anaesthetic, drill a small hole and then place the implant screw. The site will then be left to heal. Healing is the most crucial phase of the dental implant process. This is the time when the bone in your jaw will heal around and fuse with the implant screw in a natural process called osseointegration. Once your healing process is complete, your implant will be ready for restoration.

4

Final Implant Crown fitting

At your final appointment, Dr Nimit will fix your permanent restoration (one or more false teeth) to your implant abutment. He will check the fit to ensure it functions comfortably, and you will leave with a brand new smile.

Your life with dental implants

Your new dental implants will not have any sensation because implants are not connected to your nervous system. Other than that, your implants will feel very much like natural teeth when you chew with them.

Dental implants can help you enjoy an improved quality of life. As full tooth replacements, implants will allow you to:

  • Eat a variety of nutritious foods
  • Speak clearly
  • Smile with confidence
  • Prevent the loss of bone in your facial structure

Once your titanium-based dental implants have fused with the bone in your jaw, they will stay securely in place for many years. You should be able to enjoy your new implants for the rest of your life, provided you take good care of them.

We recommend the following tips to keep your dental implants in excellent condition

Clean your implants daily
Brushing and flossing are just as important for healthy dental implants as they are for healthy natural teeth. Although implants will not experience tooth decay, they can be weakened by gum disease.

Allowing dental plaque to accumulate on your implants can cause inflammation in the surrounding gum tissue and bone. This would compromise the bond between the implants and your bone, so keeping your implants clean is of the utmost importance.

Clean your implants at the same time you clean your natural teeth. Brush carefully along the gums around your implants twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. Floss gently around your implants daily.

You may need to use special oral hygiene tools if you have a dental implant bridge or a fixed set of full-mouth implants. At WS9 Dream Dental, we will happily show you specific techniques for cleaning your implant restoration.

Cleaning an implant denture is simple. Just remove and clean the prosthetic as you would any other denture. You will also have to clean around the implant abutments in your mouth.

Schedule regular implant maintenance appointments

We want to ensure that your dental implants stay healthy, comfortable and functional for many years to come. That is why we recommend that you visit our practice at regular intervals for professional implant maintenance. At these appointments, we will check on the seal of your implants and provide a specialised cleaning to remove plaque and tartar without damaging your implant or the restoration. We offer specific dental membership plans which will ensure regular visits to the dentist to have the implants checked and maintained appropriately. This ensures long term success of the implants.

FAQS

Common questions about dental implants

There is no age limit for getting implants. The most important thing is to have good oral health, adequate bone in your jaw and stable overall health. Many individuals over the age of 60 have successfully received dental implants and experienced an improved quality of life.

It is possible to be too young for dental implants. Teenagers and children under the age of 18 do not qualify for implants because their jaws and teeth are still undergoing crucial development.

The best way to find out if implants are the right treatment for you is to schedule a consultation with a Walsall, Aldridge, Little Aston implant dentist like Dr Nimit

We will recommend the best tooth replacement solution that suits your unique needs and circumstances. If implants are not right for you, we will suggest alternative treatments or inform you of steps you can take to prepare your mouth for dental implants. Please note: We do not offer dental implants on the NHS.

Dental implants fit in naturally with the rest of your teeth without putting pressure on other parts of your mouth. You may experience some discomfort after the surgical portion of your treatment, but once they have healed, your implants will be so comfortable that you won’t even notice them.

Dentures are plates of removable false teeth that rest directly on the teeth and gums. Implants are individual titanium posts that sit in the bone tissue and support restorations like crowns, bridges, and dentures.

As long as you take good care of your dental implants, they have the potential to last a lifetime.

Yes, we strongly urge you to continue maintaining excellent oral hygiene after getting dental implants. Implants may not be real teeth, but you should treat them as such. Keep your implants clean with daily brushing and flossing to prevent gum infections that can compromise the health of your dental implants.

Dental implants themselves are not removable. Once an implant post has fused with your bone, it is there for life. Most restorations (false teeth) are fixed permanently to implants and are not removable. Implant dentures, however, attach to implants with clips which allow you to take them out for easy cleaning.

If you already wear dentures, then you may be an excellent candidate for full-mouth implants. You could choose between getting implants that attach to your denture or getting implants that support a permanent bridge. Schedule a consultation with one of our implant dentists to find out whether you are a candidate.

Dental implants are one of the most predictably successful treatments in dentistry, with a success rate of 96–98%.
