Who needs dental sedation.

  • Patients who are particularly nervous or anxious to have dental treatment
  • Patients who have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Patients who have difficulty controlling movements
  • Patients who need a lot of extensive dental work that may take a long time
  • Patients having invasive procedures like surgical tooth extractions or dental implants

Our highly experienced dental anxiety team led by Dr Seema has a relaxed and caring approach and will help to put you at ease.

No matter how anxious you feel, rest assured we have seen somebody more nervous and will do everything we can to help you overcome your fears.

We have a reputation to put nervous patients at ease and treated numerous patients who are extremely nervous of dental treatment. We have helped patients who are in tears just booking their appointment and haven’t been seen for over 20 years due to their phobia.

The first step you can make in overcoming phobia is to recognise it and understand that something can be done about it.

If you are very nervous about treatment we can give you medication that puts you into a relaxed dream-like state before your treatment. We offer intravenous sedation using the drug Midazolam. Whilst you are under sedation your blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels are all monitored.

Dental sedation is one of the relaxation techniques used by our dentist who is an EXPERT in calming patients before and during dental treatment. Some patients totally avoid contacting a dentist even though they are in pain or ill health with their teeth or gums, because of dental phobia or even fears of being given an anaesthetic. Sedation is different from anaesthetic because the patient feels no pain while remaining conscious throughout the whole treatment. Dental sedation allows a patient to maintain a level of calm and control while visiting the dentist.

We are currently accepting referrals from other practices for patients who require sedation.

If you don’t attend the dentist regularly, you are a higher risk of losing your teeth, experiencing dental pain and gum disease. We want to support you to seek the dental treatment you need and our team will do the following to help you feel less anxious.

The Sedation Process

Services Img

1. Book your initial consultation

  • Here we will listen to your concerns
  • Create a comfortable and relaxing environment
  • Explain the different stages of your treatment so you know what to expect and have a written treatment plan
  • Invite you to attend with a friend or loved one for additional support if necessary
  • Carry out all preop sedation checks – this involves things like blood pressure, height and weight and oxygen levels.

2. The sedation treatment appointment

  • You would need to attend here with a chaperone (an adult you trust i.e. a family member or partner)
  • After the dental treatment has been completed, we would discharge you to your chaperone and recommend you go straight home and relax and even have a nap.
  • We don’t recommend driving or operating heavy machinery for 24hrs after your appointment.
  • You must not make any important decisions; make expensive purchases, use credit cards, social media or sign legal documents again for 24hrs after the appointment.

3. Follow up for any further treatment as necessary

  • The practice would follow up if any further treatment is required or maintenance appointments.
  • If you had been referred to us from another practice, we would discharge you back to their care.
